J.K. Cribs Corinthians
I wasn’t going to touch on the whole religion issue until later – Religion and Harry Potter is a topic that could fill a dozen entries and spark quite the debate. We’ll get to it once I’m finally done with Book 7, I promise.
But my friend just brought this to my attention and I have to share. It’s really too good to pass up, especially considering we only just got through Godric’s Hollow a couple weeks ago.
From 1 Corinthians 15: 22 – 26:
But now Christ has been raised from the dead,
the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
For since death came through a human being,
the resurrection of the dead came also through a human being.
For just as in Adam we die, so too in Christ shall all be brought to life,
but each one in proper order: Christ the firstfruits;
then, at the coming, those who belong to Christ;
Then comes the end, when he hands over the kingdom to his God and Father,
when he had destroyed every sovereignty and every authority and power.
For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.
The last enemy to be destroyed is death.
Mill over that one for awhile. We’ll discuss at a later date.
(Thanks for bringing this up, Liz)

The second epigraph from Godric’s Hollow is also from the Bible- Matthew 6:21. Here’s it is starting with verse 19 (NIV): “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
The religious symbolism and references in Harry Potter are really quite interesting- and they’re all over the place if you look carefully. I can’t say much more now, but I’m excited for any post-DH discussion there might be.
YES! I knew I had heard that somewhere before.
Many years of Catholic education are coming rushing back to me.
It’s really rather funny to think that “Christian” groups tried to have HP banned from libraries on the grounds that it promoted “dark magic.” By their lights, so did Jesus.
Chew on that for a while.
Yeah, this is going to make for a nice debate. Again, we’ll get there eventually. But the fact that my university offered a class simply on whether or not Harry Potter is blasphemous (this was before all 7 books were even out), you know there’s a lot of fodder here.
Come on, you’re on to something Bobby. You’re on to something.
The awesomeness of that comment may not be understood by anyone else, but I LOVE it – and you know why
