A Nod to the Hunger Games Trailer
Maybe it’s an erroneous assumption, but I’m going to guess that there are many Harry Potter fans out there who have fallen for Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games. I’m always a little late to the party, if you haven’t noticed, but I caught up with this series over the summer, just in time to anxiously await the first film. And by “caught up” I mean devoured with my jaw hanging open.
After a lackluster teaser clip a few months ago, we finally have a complete trailer. Check it out below:
What do you think? You’re pretty accustomed to amazing books being turned into films at this point, what with the 7-books-turned-8-movies deal you’ve been through with Harry Potter. Some of you may even be Twilight fans (why? for the love of all that is literature, why?) We all know what it’s like when a book is turned into an amazing movie (Deathly Hallows) and when a movie all but destroys our favorite story (Goblet of Fire).
Do you think The Hunger Games will live up?
Right now, I’m a little worried they are gunning for the Twihard contingency. While I haven’t watched more that a few minutes of any Twilight movie at a time (because I can’t stomach all that angst – it makes Half-Blood Prince look downright jolly), I can tell you it’s not a paramount of fine film making. For all their faults, at least I’m comfortable calling the Harry Potter films “films”.
Do you think The Hunger Games will earn that distinction, or will the cinematic journey into the arena leave fans cold?

Hmmm… it looks OK. I think the book will probably be better. Although I couldn’t really get into the book. It was fine, just not as cool as HP.
I thought The Underland Chronicles by the same author were better.
You never can tell which book will be a big hit in the movie industry and pick up a huge fanbase. Take Percy Jackson. Some people thought it’d be big like Harry Potter, but it only came out with one movie with no sequels.
I hope fans of Hunger Games will enjoy it though…even if it’s somewhat similar to Battle Royale. I just don’t really think people should assume that HP fans would go onto the next big franchise, may that be Hunger Games or something else, because that makes us seem pretty shallow, lol.
I think it looks like it’ll be fantastic. It’s being directed by Gary Ross (who directed and produced the incredibly well made Seabiscuit) and it looks like they’re going to stick pretty close to the book. I literally got chills while watching the trailer, so I’ll definitely be there at the midnight premier. xD
Actually, I read the Hunger Games and found the last book really, really disappointing…the movie seems okay, it’ll probably be quite good, but nothing amazing. But I won’t be losing any sleep if they don’t get it perfect, I guess, because I’m not that caught up in the series. As I said, I thought the ending was very anticlimatic – the entire last book seemed, to me, as if Collins got tired of the story and tried to end it as soon as possible – killing anyone to get Katniss to what she needed, with no other reason behind it. But also, I don’t really like her style of ending each chapter with a cliff-hanger, as it got very repetitive and it made the flow of the story very disjointed.
That’s just me, though.
I liked the books well enough to finish them (a rarity for me), but I doubt I’ll be reading them again. I’ll see the movie in theaters, but I’m not bouncing on the edge of my seat to do so.
A absolutely love ‘The Hunger Games’. It lies on my bookshelf next to Harry Potter… And that means very much. I fell in love with the story and the characters and because of that I was very anxious to see what they will do with the film. And after seeing this trailer, I guess I can sleep peacefully. As Lauren said, they stick close to the book and that’s VERY good. I enjoyed watching the Twilight films (yes, I guess I’m one of the people you mentioned…), they were also close to the book and got the right climate. So, to be honest, I prefer New Moon rather than The Order of the Phoenix (still talking about films, remember!). I’m sure that Suzanne’s Collins trilogy will be better in a printed version, but I’ll never expect that the films will exceed the books. Anyways, I keep my fingers crossed for ‘The Hunger Games’!
If it is any consolation, I am even slower than you when it comes to ‘The Hunger Games’… and I really don’t have time to even find out if I would like it right now…
Basically, I consider Harry Potter a tough act to follow… We’ll see…
I am now preparing a delicious recipe composed of eating my words…
My piano teacher (my friend) and I got into talking about books, and she mentioned The Hunger Games, and offered to lend me her copy today. So I have been reading it. It is very hard to put down! (in more ways than one.)
I am so looking forward to this movie! I won´t be, you know, crying my eyes out if the films aren´t living up to my expectations..:P But I did really like the books!
I waited to read the hunger games. I thought it was overrated. kids killing each other in an arena was all I had ever heard of it. Sooo… I looked it up and fell in love with it. I just finished mocking jay yesterday. SO SAD.
I can’t stop watching this! I’m crying my eyes out because of how it ends…
You should make a Hunger Games blog too>
Loved the series and I think they did an amazing job with the casting. When I saw the cast for Peeta i was a bit disappointed at first, but after this trailer, I feel like they knew exactly what they where doing. Can´t wait for the movie!
I was a bit disappointed when I saw that prim and rue looked nothing alike. But, you can’t have everything.
Prim is described as blue-eyed and blonde. Rue’s Black. It’s her youth and vulnerability that reminds Katniss of Prim, not any physical resemblance. At least they got that right.
I think this will fall somewhere in between HP and Twilight. HP will be the pinnacle of book-to-movie. Twilight is the “WTF?! WHY DOES THIS EXIST?!” end. I think HG will be the “Wow, that was a pretty solid adaption, I really liked it” middle ground. It won’t be groundbreaking, but I think with the casting and the trailer, it’ll be solid enough to make all three books into movies and have a good fanbase.
I don’t know if the movie is going to be good. So far, it looks very close to the book, but I’m not sure I agree with how good-looking the characters are. I always imagined them being more mundane, and I certainly didn’t imagine them that old. They’re supposed to be underfed, not buff or womanly.
Maybe I’m being too nitpicky, but it really bothers me when characters are beautified, especially concerning such dark concepts.
I can understand why Katniss is attractive. That’s implied throughout the series, but since she may be one of the most oblivious characters ever created, she has no idea; and since she’s the narrator, we aren’t told flat out that she’s pretty. Most of what we know about Katniss is conveyed through those around her. While she may not understand why people act the way they do toward her, we are able to look past her to interpret their behavior. She’s a fantastic “unreliable narrator” – a storyteller who is so embedded in the story that she cannot see all angles, leaving the reader to analyze without her.
I loved the books (although I too was a little bit disappointed in the last one; I thought there was some sloppy plot construction.) I would have loved District 13 to look a little grubbier and grittier, but I’m going to go with cautiously optimistic here.
I LOVED the books. Close to the amount I enjoyed Harry Potter.. they were amazing.
The movies.. I wish Katniss and Haymitch looked..Well..A little more rundown. They look to perfect to be apart of District twelve.
But, as said above, you cannot have everything, though I would desperatle want to.
I’m all for Haymitch looking more rundown, but it’s possible the clip we see of him in the trailer is when they are in the Capitol. As a mentor, I imagine he received a complete makeover upon arrival just like the tributes.
