Merry Christmas, Muggles!

Things have been pretty quiet here at The Last Muggle recently, but I haven’t forgotten about all you wizard-loving muggles. Have a Merry Christmas/Happy Hanukkah/Awesome Winter Solstice and we will jump back into our re-read of Goblet of Fire after all the presents are opened, egg nog is drained, and stockings are unhung from the chimney (with care).

Until then, I have to ask:

I recently heard someone refer to the Harry Potter films as Christmas movies.

Do you agree?

  1. Merry Christmas.

I cannot see how Harry Potter can be christmas movies?

  2. I could see how they could be Christmas movies, if you fast forward through summer, autumn, and Halloween…then skip the rest…. :)

Do something similar with focusing on Halloween next October…but I really don’t think Easter would work very well.

  3. And a very merry Christmas to you, too!

  4. I saw that they were going to be on. I do not, however, feel as if these are Christmas movies. Though I shall not complain-any excuse to watch them is good enough for me.

  5. Hi Jess. I hope you had a wonderful holiday!

I can see the Potter movies as Christmas movies definitely. Not in the sense that they are about Christmas, but in that they are fun movies which, for the most part, all of the family can watch together. The last ones are maybe a bit too dark for younger ones, but definitely the early movies are great for the whole family.

  6. I don’t think they’re Christmas movies at all. Especially when you compare to Christmas movies like “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” or “The Santa Clause” and such. However, if people want to start the tradition of watching the Harry Potter movies during Christmas, that sounds just fantastic to me ^_^

Hope you had a lovely Christmas XD

  7. I can finally join the big re-read now! Got a Collectors set with all the books (in english) for Cristmas. :D I absolutely adore it, they look so nice! But of course, now I have to read the three first very fast.:P

    Merry Christmas! :)

  8. I believe that are Christmas movies :) I watch and read them every year at Christmas time… they make me feel the joy of the season. They may not be “Christmas” movies, but they certainly have the holiday tone to them.

  9. No, I don’t really think they’re Christmas movies. But I DO love the Godric’s Hollow/Christmas Eve scene in DH1! That is the best Christmas scene in those movies! :D

  10. Christmas movies? WHAT?

  11. One of the movie moments that stands out for me is in Philosopher’s/Sorcerer’s Stone when Harry has his first Christmas at Hogwarts. Hagrid dragging in a big tree, Flitwick decorating, the Ghost Choir singing Hogwarts themed carols. And Harry gets his first real presents, plus his father’s Cloak. Of course it was all to further the plot a bit, but it seems the movies stress Christmas more than Halloween, which was an important holiday in the books. Lots of action happens on Halloween, such as Hermione and the Troll. Still, not specifically Holiday movies, agreed.

  12. Harry Potter movies, and books, are for any time of the year!

  13. Christmas is all about good conquering evil and ultamitly love. Those two concepts are the building blocks to the whole series so i would say yes!

  14. I am really missing the Last Muggle blogs. What is happening? Is this really the last entry you have made, Jess?

  15. I have to agree that the Harry Potter series aren’t exactly Christmas movies, but perhaps what you mean is that they’re sort of special occasion movies? Not ‘oh we’re having a party let’s watch Deathly Hallows’ sort of occasion, but more, um, hm, words… you have to be in the right mood to watch them. Have a taste for losing yourself in that particular world for a while. Maybe they carry their own season with them, as it were. ‘Today’s sort of blustery and dramatic–hey, let’s watch Prisoner of Azkaban!’

  16. Although this post is old…I have to be the one to say I think that the Harry Potter movies ARE Christmas movies…perhaps a not-so-literal choice for the season, but nonetheless, they sure stir up those warm, fuzzy feelings associated with Christmas that complements a hot mug of cocoa by the fire!

  17. I can see how some people feel the HP movies are Christmas movies. I actually tend to watch them/read them from October to December. They just feel like fall movies to me…

  18. Hi!

I just wanted to let you know that I’ve given you a blog award: http://musingsfromnevillesnavel.wordpress.com/2012/02/24/the-versatile-blogger-award/

  19. Hello!
Just wanted to let you know that I devoured your entire blog in two days. It was a lot of fun to read; I really wish I’d been around in 2009/2010 as you were reading. As others have said, it’s almost as fun watching someone else read them for the first time as it was to read them yourself! It looks like you’ve been absent for a few months, but if you ever return, I’d love to join in the reread. It’s true that there’s a lot of fun to be had in rereading HP. :] But anyway, I just wanted to let you know that your thoughts and insights were quite interesting–and often hilarious. I’ll be keeping an eye on your blog in case you come back.

  21. Hey!
I’m just wondering whether this is the end of the line, or just a dry period, or what…looking forward very much to hearing from you again.

(I have previously commented as Lily)

  22. I always thought of the books and movies as a Summer time thing. It’s a lot more comfortable reading a Harry Potter book on a Summer’s night, and it feels right to me. I normally get more of a craving for the series as it get’s farther into Spring, and then obsess when it’s Summer.

  23. So, where are you? :) I discovered your blog few month ago, just before your last post actually. I found it very funny because I could sometimes recognize myself in your discoveries when I was reading HP for the first time, 12 years ago. Hope there will be a new post soon :)

  24. Just to let you know that it seems like your twitter account has been hacked again :s

  25. Does anyone know what’s going on with Jess and if she’ll ever be coming back?

  26. Are you going to make more posts?

  27. Where are you? I need to laugh about Harry Potter!
